Frying The Environment

Most everybody enjoys going to mcdonalds and getting a burger and fries. But do you ever stop to think about where those tasty, golden fries come from? Most people don't really stop to think about it. But then again the E.P.A. isn't most people. According to the E.P.A., the "Simplot factory was the main source of a potentially deadly amount of phosphorus dumped into the Portneuf River"(Hurt 4). All this waste that is dumped into the Portneuf River is from the over 3 billion pounds of fries, produced annually, nonedible scraps. These scraps inlude phosphate, phosphorus, and nitrate compounds (Hurt 4).
These scraps actually would do no harm to humans if they were properly stored in barrels and containers. But if they were, then I wouldn't be blogging about it right now. Instead, Simplot has been placing its waste by-products from its fertilizer company in unlined stockpiles which have contaminatied surrounding groundwater and the local Porneuf River (Hurt 4).
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that what Simplot is doing is wrong for the environment, the wildlife, and the local people. I think this is beyond the level of slaping Simplot on the wrists and giving them a fine. I think immediat action needs to be taken involving a notice that all environmentally dangerous opertions must sece and assist or else the plant will be shut down within a preset date. How is it that we talk about other countries needing to change their environmental strategies and yet we can't even clean up our own backyard? Chances are that forcful action wont be taken but it does need special attention from the E.P.A. and more important, the public.

  1. Dear writer,
Thanks for posting this very interesting blog. I am shocked to find out such amazing information about where my favorite fries really come from. I really couldn’t believe what I read.
When you included the information that “All this waste that is dumped into the Portneuf River is from the over 3 billion pounds of fries, produced annually, nonedible scraps. These scraps inlude phosphate, phosphorus, and nitrate compounds (Hurt 4),” I was in disbelief. This is not okay! It brings a thousand questions to my mind. Are McDonald’s fries more harmful that we think? What are or could be the outcomes of this?
Your question “how is it that we talk about other countries needing to change their environmental strategies and yet we can't even clean up our own backyard?” is totally agreeable. We should take action first while we encourage others around the world to make a change.
Once again, thanks so much for posting this blog. It was something I truly had no idea about and learned so much from. I am very impressed with your finding and I am definitely going to look into this problem more.
    Sincerely,
    Baltimore Oriole.

  2. Dear Candid Corporations:

I have honestly never asked myself where fries really come from, but I am glad to know now. It worries me that with factories that are making fries is not doing their share to protect the environment. I know that there are a huge number of fries made each day and huge numbers of fries can only mean huge amounts of waste that is not being handled properly.

I was interested to read that “All this waste that is dumped into the Portneuf River is from the over 3 billion pounds of fries, produced annually, no edible scraps. These scraps include phosphate, phosphorus, and nitrate compounds.” 3 billion pounds of fries are produced annually yet no one is enforcing environmental policies against their huge amounts of miss handled waste. If the EPA knows that there is a huge problem with the waste products that this company is producing I don’t understand why they haven’t stepped in and stopped the contamination.

Another part of your post that I agreed with was when you stated “How is it that we talk about other countries needing to change their environmental strategies and yet we can't even clean up our own backyard?” I also believe that we should be focused more on our own countries problems instead of trying to help fix other countries problems.

I'm glad to learn this information and I really enjoyed reading your post and expect many more great topics to follow. Keep up the good work.

  3. Dear Hunter,
I was amazed to see what you have written. It shocked me to know that a company could do this without any reprocussions. I am also amazed to see that the things being dumped in the river is french fries that are harmful to the environment.
“Instead, Simplot has been placing its waste by-products from its fertilizer company in unlined stockpiles which have contaminated surrounding groundwater and the local Porneuf River.” This really stuck out to me because I would be worried about drinking the water if harmful wastes were being dumped into the river. I am shocked and angered that this company has been participating in this act.
“I think immediate action needs to be taken involving a notice that all environmentally dangerous operations must cease and assist or else the plant will be shut down within a preset date.” I completely agree with what is said here. I think action does need to be taken to prevent other companies from doing this. If action is not taken, these acts will continue to happen across the world.
Thank you for writing about this topic and letting people know what these companies are doing. I will continue to come back and read your interesting blogs.
    Sincerely,
    Bluebird

I completely agreed with what you had to say about corporations in this particular blog. I have read all your other blogs, and this one stood out to me because of the truth inside of it. The statistics you through out there were magnificent. I will for sure keep coming back to read what else you have to say about corporations. You Rock!!
